Capstone Projects (Engineering Design / Senior Design)

This page summarizes capstone project guidance, topic areas, and a curated archive of past design/graduation projects (with PDF reports where available).

Project Topics

The engineering design / senior projects are typically grouped into the following areas:

  1. Desktop Application Projects (requires database knowledge) — typically suitable for individual projects (desktop application development experience is required).
  2. Statistics and Artificial Intelligence Applications/Projects — usually at least two people.
  3. Engineering Projects — typically suitable for one person.

Expected at the beginning / end of term

  • For items 1 and 3, knowledge of .NET C#, Java, or C++ (Qt) is expected.
  • For all projects, the application must be running at the end of the term.
  • For items 2 and 3, the work should be completed and an IEEE conference–format paper describing the work should be prepared by the end of the semester (except the completion file).

Guidelines & Must‑Haves

Start early

If you want your project to be applicable and realizable, start contacting and planning in the 3rd year spring semester.

Bring multiple ideas

Have a few topics in mind. If you don’t, choose from the topics announced each year or propose your own topic.

Implementation matters

Capstone projects are expected to be implemented and running at the end of the term.

Structure and rigor

For AI/statistics/heuristics projects, an additional 8–10 page report may be required (besides the standard booklet).

Object‑oriented approach

Software studies are encouraged to follow an object‑oriented approach and combine two different topics rather than only one.

Meetings & supervision

Plan to meet regularly (often every two weeks). Supervision capacity may be limited per semester.

Some projects can be directed toward competitions and funding opportunities (e.g., TÜBİTAK programs) and international contests (e.g., Imagine Cup, SCORE).
